"Of all his early studies, perhaps none is more important to the child as a means of education than that of arithmetic." -Charlotte Mason

"The chief value of arithmetic, like that of the higher mathematics, lies in the training it affords the reasoning powers, and in the habits of insight, readiness, accuracy, intellectual truthfulness it engenders." -Charlotte Mason

Just one way we do beginning arithmetic- We spent an enjoyable morning at the park, reading parts of- The Story of Numbers. We learned about counting with fingers, roman numerals, tally marks and more. We read about how often we use numbers throughout our day. And then... we went for a number hunt. We took our favorite wooden numbers so that we could identify the numeral along with the item we found. Isaak identified, found and/or collected the items. We snapped a photograph, loaded the pictures, printed them out, and created our very own counting book. So fun. We will work on writing the numerals on each page of our book as well as writing the item which was counted.
